A traveler and writer of haiku. Since early times travelers have kept diaries of their journeys. When Basho travelled he wrote haiku. He lived the life of a poet –poems were his way of living. He lived simply, sometimes staying in the house of a friend, often being supported by his students, writing poems as a means of payment or thank you gifts. The Zen concept of “first word, best word” reflect the immediacy in his writing.
